QUMRAN AND JOHN THE BAPTIST. Dr. W. A. Criswell. Matthew a.m. On the radio and on television you are sharing the services of the First Baptist Church in Dallas. This is the pastor bringing the message. It is entitled Qumran and John the Baptist. I wish I could have delivered this message immediately after I came back from.   2. John had a much stricter diet (Luke ) than did the Essenes. 3. John preached Jesus as the Messiah. The Essenes did not recognize Jesus as Messiah, but they thought that the Teacher of Righteousness would himself be an Essene. 4. There was a strong organization among the Essenes that was missing among John the Baptist’s disciples.

The Dead Sea Scrolls, found between and in caves on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, provide us with a picture of a first-century Jewish community that could well have been the home of John the Baptist. At the very least, the possibility is worth exploring. A widely held theory is that Qumran was inhabited by the Hebrew sect called 'the Essenes.' This was an ascetic Jewish religious community that existed in Palestine at the time the occupation of the Qumran site flourished, and which was both contemporary with and pre-dated John the Baptist, Jesus of Nazareth and the Roman destruction of the.

Jesus was a Palestinian Jew and a contemporary of some of the Essenes at Qumran, but there is no mention of John the Baptist, Jesus, his disciples or the Christian church in any of the Qumran texts, just as there is no mention of Essenes in any New Testament writing. But what the Essenes and the Qumran scrolls do show us is the kind of challenges that could be brought against some of the traditional lines of Jewish thought, and even the operation of the Temple.

The Library of Qumran: On the Essenes, Qumran, John the Baptist, and Jesus (German) Paperback – 1 May by Hartmut Stegemann (Author)/5(7).

The chapters at the end on the Essenes, John the Baptist, and Jesus were the most interesting to me. Essentially nothing directly about John and Jesus was found in the ruins. Nevertheless much can be concluded using the New Testament and general scholarship.

Many theories of various writers are discussed and comparisons are made.5/5(1). Northwest of the Dead Sea, twelve kilometers to the south of Jericho and thirty-two kilometers north of the En-gedi Oasis, lie the ruins of a community long known to the Bedouins as 'Khirbet Qumran'.
